Clean Leather Couch
We all want our clean leather couch to look great for as long as possible, especially if there are kids or pets around. So how do we manage to keep that showroom look as the years roll by?
The first thing you should consider is whether the manufacturer offers any special finish to the leather to help keep stains at bay. Some sofas have a thin polyurethane coating to help repel day to day spills so if you have young children this may be a worthwhile investment.
Of course accidents do happen and your once clean leather couch could end up looking a little sorry for itself.
So what do you do then?
This depends on a number of factors, such as the type of stain and how soon you get to it. But here's a few emergency tips:
- Blot With Kitchen Towel
As soon as possible soak up as much of the spill as you can with dry kitchen towel. Use a gentle blotting action so as not to push the spill further into the leather. Remember, the more of the stain you catch at this stage, the better your overall result will be. - Damp Cloth
For the vast majority of stains, once you have removed the bulk of the offending material it is possible to get extremely good results by cleaning with a damp cloth. Just remember not to make the cloth too wet as the water can also stain the leather. - Dry Naturally
Once you have removed the mess, allow the formerly stained area to dry naturally to avoid forming cracks, splits or shrinkage. - Consult A Specialist
Before you apply any over the counter leather cleaning products it is wise to consult a specialist as you don't want to accidentally 'fix' the offending stain into the leather. If you insist on using a cleaning product check on a hidden part of the sofa first to ensure it doesn't do anything to the leather that you may regret.
If you catch the stain early enough and treat it gently with a bit of luck you will end up with a clean leather couch again instead of having to browse the leather couches for sale ads for a replacement!.
